Coffee issues in Asia

I got different issues about coffee when traveling around. For most of people in Europe and Australia and I think also in the US, it's something normal to start the day with a cup of coffee, and also have more coffees during the day. Some people are really passionate about coffee considering it sometimes more necessary than food! (that's me!!!)

In Europe, in the UK, in the most of the Balkan countries, also in Istanbul it's very easy to find a cup of coffee everywhere, in a plastic cup, or in a glass, cold or warm, espresso, cappuccino, french coffee or different kind of taste coffee based beverage but this is not happening everywhere...

Asia people I think are the less drinking coffee people, and that make it really hard to get a coffee in there places, it's almost impossible to find really good quality of coffee.

Hong Kong is a very popular place with so many visitors from the whole world, but even so i have had some hard moments to find a cup of good coffee around. In the center and the areas around there is everywhere a Starbucks or a Pacific coffee but also many other unknown coffee shops. In areas with no tourists is difficult to find any coffee shop or anyone who could serve a normal cup of coffee. Hong Kong island is ok, but Kowloon, there are only a few points serving real coffee.

Macao is like Hong Kong, there is always a coffee shop around the center. There are also some casinos there is served a kind of coffee and tea for free, but it's much better to choose some tea, believe me!

But on country site just be happy with a cup of tea!

Singapore is like Hong Kong and Macao.

China, it's really difficult for coffee lovers. Big cities like Guangzhou or Shenzhen there is always a Starbucks somewhere but nothing better. Out of the big cities it's impossible to find a cup of coffee, people don't even know what coffee is! But you may find very special tea, if you are all right with.

Thailand, I find coffee in Bangkok and Pattaya, there are many coffee shops but the coffee is not the desirable, usually it's cheap robusta coffee as everywhere in Asia. I had some issue with the hotel, they served coffee only with the breakfast! And you need to pay the whole breakfast even if you want just a coffee!

In Japan there is coffee but it's really expensive, as everything in Japan!

Taiwan there is some kind of coffee and some Starbucks (for anyone who like Starbucks), the difficult part of is to get understand what exactly kind of coffee do you want!

S.Korea is the paradise of coffee in Asia! There is everywhere good coffee, nice coffee shops and people do consume a lot of coffee and sure they do because of there working time schedule!

So for my next trip I will be prepared for having a cheap cup of coffee everywhere!
I will take my moka pot (there is everywhere a place to use it), a filter keeper, a French press and some Nescafe portions!
It's easy to make coffee by shaking with a shot of cold water a portion of Nescafe in a 0.5L bottle and adding finally the rest of the water, so you may have a quickly very cheap coffee, everywhere. I use this way to have coffee many times before in China! Maybe I should invest some money in a Handresso soon.
